It has potential, but there needs serious improvements in a sequel before it can even begin to measure up to From's games or even the better Souls-likes. But this is one of the weaker Souls-likes I've played so far honestly. I just unlocked the 'bazookallista' too and it seems like a riot. I am warming up to the hardening mechanic, at least (wasn't really feeling it in the demo), and I still get enough enjoyment out of exploring and defeating enemies, the bosses are decent, and the brigand ending made me LOL. * Ironically Hellpoint actually did try to innovate there too but they made their system work a lot better A fuckton of those annoying grab-attack enemies and nothing else, everywhere? Who thought this was a good idea -_. Speaking of the mist from the gland thing. I actually ran to the Prisoner to make it stop because of how annoying it was, only realizing I had only opened up one frog chest. And the incessant, LOUD bell that kept ringing when I was carrying the gland back in Fallgrim was infernal. I don't need to hear the vendor's cat purring super loudly every time I'm in the menu/shopping (the cat is cute, at least - and you can pet it!). They went overboard with the DualSense features. The martyr's sword is absurdly slow and doesn't even hit that hard? What gives? bad? I am missing the mace so far (saw it in loading screens) but the hammer and chisel seem wayyyy better than anything else.

And whose idea was it to forcefully waste your first use of an item? Come on, this was a bad idea, full stop. The mushrooms barely heal anything, they heal super slowly, and take forever to respawn. What were they thinking? Honestly this is one of those cases where I'd say 'yeah just copy Dark Souls FFS, stop trying to be unique * '. The item system, especially healing, is terrible. It feels like you've seen all the game has to offer very early on. Souls-likes shine at giving the player a lot of options to customize and improve your character, but progression and customization is very limited here. I've dipped my toes in Eternal Narthex but it looks so sprawling and confusing that I'm noping out of there for now. So far I've cleared the Abandoned Chamber -> Enshrined Sanctum and it was meh. Individual levels are not that great either.

A boring, flat forest with no lighting, maze-like but not in a good way, just confusing and tedious to navigate. And I'm having a decent enough time, but uh, it sure is flawed, eh? So far it's better than the demo, at least the game stops eating my inputs which was infuriating. I got this for my birthday (PS5 version) and started it a few days ago. I avidly await what the studio does next, either by way of a sequel or an offshoot of the great foundation they've established here. It is however a smaller, distilled experience lacking some of the depth and variety offered by the core Souls games with weaker boss and encounter design overall. It's legitimately among the very best Soulslike games available. I really loved MS, and I think it's an absolutely stellar first entry for a fresh studio in a difficult genre.

There are some cool setups in MS, but I don't think it quite compares. I think we also take the extremely high quality of bosses and encounter design in the Souls games for granted. It isn't particularly well balanced between weapons though. The labyrinthine environments are cool and full of nooks and crannies but there isn't always meaningful stuff to find.Ĭombat is weight and satisfying, and the Harden system is more than just a gimmick, it adds a susprising twist to combat with it being your primary defensive option. It's an issue I've found with a few great games like this. Obviosuly it isn't an RPG in the same sense, it's much smaller in scale made by a smaller team (which works to it's favour in my opinion) but there is a distinct design difference there.Įxploration is pretty good, but I wish there was more meaningful stuff to find. That said, it's leagues away from being 'better' than the likes of Dark Souls 3. I think this game is fantastic and an absolute triumph of atmosphere and visual presentation.
